One of the many "perks" of steam locomotive design was the 4-8-4. Used in both high speed passenger and manifest freight service, the "Northern" was the epitome of steam versatility. The Santa Fe began it's 4-8-4 collection with #3751 (Baldwin) in 1927. In year-long road testing versus Mountain #3714, the Northern was a standout in steaming, fuel conservation and speed! This test prompted the purchase of a total of 14 in this class, numbered 3751 through 3764. 10 more were purchased in the 3776 class and 30 in the 2900 class. AT&SF acquired a total of 54 4-8-4s. The 3751 class was delivered as stoker-fed coal burners, and were converted to oil firing in the mid-1930s. Often modified, 10 of this class received roller-bearing tender trucks and 80" drivers with roller bearings, and a relocated Elesco heater. Originally equipped with Elesco feedwater heaters, in the 1946-48 years, most of this class were modified to Worthington equipment and a single larger sandbox. Air pumps and feedwater pumps were shifted, plumbing changed . . . HELP! . . . All these changes and upgrades made the 1940s and 50s versions of this class far more modern and powerful than when originally delivered! The Division Point and Boo-Rim will offer this LIMITED EDITION project in different numbers. With only 100 pieces to be produced, you are well advised to contact your dealer to reserve yours! |
