EMD's CAB/BOOSTER DIESELS: F-2s,3s,7s,9s,FPs |
see each model catalog for the order sheet |
After World War Two and the success of the "FT", more that 30 railroad had placed "F-Unit" orders. "F-Units" were to have more horsepower, optional gearing for high-speed passenger service, and an improved electrical plant. Post-war evolution of the "F-Unit" gave birth to the F-2, an interim update to the "FT" model. Still 1350 HP, the F-2 did introduce the new 16-567B engine and an improved carbody. In a short time the F-2 was succeeded by the F-3n which introduced the full 1500 hp potential of the new engine and generator. While other builders introduced cab/booster streamlined sets, EMD continued to dominate the market. In Early 1949, the F-7 continued adding inprovements and increased reliability to become the most popular locomotive design in North America. The FP-7 increased the length to acommodate larger steam-heat tanks. The final model, the F-9 introduced the the improved 657C engine and was produced from 1954 to 1960. Yes, there were FP-9s for passenger service
The Division Point began it's on-going F-Unit project with delivery of FP-7 and FP-9 versions in 2005 (Run 1a). A second run of FP-7s and FP-9s, as well as F-2s, F-3s and F-7s (Run 1b) arrived in June of 2006. June of 2007 saw the arrival of more F-2s, F-3s, F-7s, FP-7, and FP-9s. Run 3 is arrived in 2008, and run 4 is expected in 2010.
