After G.E.'s experiments with the UM20B and the UD18, General Electric was ready to enter the road diesel market. The U25B
roared onto the scene in 1960. The U25B was powered by the newly introduced 2,500-hp. FDL16 engine, and features included a central air system,
pressurized engine and control compartments, advanced wheel-slip control and an improved cooling system. The first G.E. demonstrators (751,752)
hit the road during 1960, visiting 14 roads and racking up over 61,000 miles. They were followed by G.E. 753-756, the first production U25Bs.
These wore high short hoods and redesigned front platforms, steps and walkways, and toured over 74,000 miles on nine roads.
The Union Pacific and the Frisco were the first customers and they were followed by fifteen other roads. Production ended in
February 1966, with 478 units produced.
