Compound Articulated Locomotives

Faced with the need to move more and more coal, in 1936 the N&W started to develop it's own version of the "modern" steam locomotive. In true N&W fashion, and in it's own Roanoke shops, the modernization of the true compound engine Mallet got underway! Based on development of the original U.S.R.A. 2-8-8-2's, the N&W Y-6 series of true Mallets were the pinnacle of these workhorses. These were as modern as could be! Higher capacity boiler, cast steel frames with integral cylinders, American multiple front-end throttle, Worthington 4-1/2-BL feedwater heater, roller bearings, Berkley stoker, oh my!

Well suited to mountain terrain's heavy grades and sharp curves, with inherent slow speed and a wide range of work, these locos became the workhorses of the N&W! The Division Point and Boo-Rim Precision will bring you these long awaited modern Mallets that were so common on the tracks of the N&W. We will offer this LIMITED EDITION project in different numbers of all sub-classes. As is usual, lighting is included. With a limited number of pieces to be produced, you are well advised to contact your dealer to reserve yours!

As usual, we are indebted to those folks who publish the information and photos we need. We urge you to buy their books and photos.
