Steam Locomotive |
Designed for the Yellowstone Division's Mandan-to-Glendive run, the first NP "Yellowstone" was in essence a test locomotive built by Alco in 1929. The huge articulated 2-8-8-4 was equipped with all the latest auxilary equipment, a "modern" locomotive. Although problems surfaceed, as they were addressed the NP decided to purchase more copies of the "World's Largest Locomotive" Surprisingly, Baldwin Locomotive Works underbid Alco, and got the order for 11 more Z-5s. All the Z-5s were plagued by breaking front frames and steam leakage and seldom steamed to their capability. All the problems were addressed in a 1941 rebuilding, just in time for World War II, and the heavy work involved.
These were tremdously powerful machines, and regularly hauled 4,000 tons across the Mandan-Glendive at speeds of 25-35 mph. The did their job as planned and did it well.
We at the Division Point felt that the Z-5s would be an interesting follow-on to the Z-7s and Z-8s. As usual, Division Point and Boo-Rim will offer this LIMITED EDITION project in different numbers in early and later versions. Lighting is included and these will be DCC-ready. With a limited number of pieces to be produced, you are well advised to contact your dealer to reserve yours!
Road numbers, versions and delivery projections will be announced soon! Watch this page! We encourage NP fans to contact us with data and comments to assure accurate models. We WILL listen.
| As usual, we are indebted to those folks who publish the information and photos we need. We urge you to buy their books and photos. |
