The AT&SF had some tough terrain to cover in the Southwestern U.S. In particular, water was scarce, and when
found was often unsuitable for steam use. Like most railroads, the Santa Fe mounted rectangular or round tubs on flatcars to carry
water to work crews and locomotives. As petroleum products began to be shipped in increasing quantities, tank cars evolved through
iron to steel construction. Besides using tank cars in revenue service, the Santa Fe developed a sizable fleet of non-revenue tank
cars. These tanks hauled engine water, lubricating oils, chromate water, solvents, weed killers, and most importantly, locomotive
fuels (fuel oil and diesel fuel). These cars were painted silver, black or gray, with colorful identifying band, depending on usage.
The Division Point is initiating a series of projects to bring you these ubiquitous cars. Richard Hendrickson and
Richard Pelouse's book Santa Fe Tank Cars has become our "bible" for this project and we recommend it highly!
