Denver & Rio Grand Western
(Narrow-Gauge)
DROP-BOTTOM WOOD GONDOLAS

The Rio Grande had plenty of drop-bottom gondolas, used in hauling coal and rock or cinder ballast. Mainly, they carried Grande-owned materials.

The D&RGW purchased 200 drop-bottom gondolas in 1903 from American Car and Foundry. These gondolas came in two flavors, the 700 series and the 800 series. Both series had a wood frame, with board sides above. The 700s had three-high boards, and the 800s added a 4th board for greater capacity. All of these "gons" were rebuilt in the late 1920s and somewhat "modernized" with steel bolsters and stronger coupler draft gear. Some gondolas had another top board added for additional capacity.

Call your dealer and reserve a handful of these useful cars!
